With the Christmas right around the corner I had to share with you the merriest project I worked on last year with Scholastic’s Jennifer Rinaldi. Poems from under my Tree is a collection of crazy funny Christmas poems written by the equally funny, though slightly crazier Alan Katz. Alan’s poems were so hilarious and filled with so much energy I wanted to do only one sketch per poem as quick as I could to keep as much of that energy as possible. Other than a couple minor detail changes Jennifer and the editor approved all the sketches as is. Here are 3 of the 40 sketches.
Alan’s genius is getting the words moose, piano, and caboose into one poem! And have it be about Christmas no less!
I also had a blast sneaking Alan into the illustration for the last poem of the book:
Since it is a Christmas book I felt it necessary to illustrate Alan’s Christmas wish coming true on the author’s page:
And guess what? I had a wish of mine come true by illustrating not one but two books of Alan’s poems. The other one was about Halloween. You can see more artwork from these titles in the book section of my website.
